Description
The 2nd in the series of Canadian Heritage Rivers stamps was issued on April 22, 1992, illustrating 5 of this country's famous waterways of industry and commerce. Similar to format used in 1991,, the stamps were issued in a Stamp Pack of 10. Canada is famous worldwide for its natural resource industries, fisheries, logging, agriculture, hydro-electric power, recreation and tourism.
Known by the Micmacs as "Tjigaoegatig", or bass place, and by the French as "la rivière de l'ouest", the Eliot or West River rises in the highest rolling hills of Prince Edward Island, a splendid example of the tidal rivers characteristic of the province. Farmland extends to its shore and in days gone by its wharves were the scene of much exporting activity, including Malpeque oysters, the Island's most valuable commercial shellfish. Tourism is the main industry here along with the harvest of Irish moss, a considerable and dependable source of local income.
