Description

The noble walrus, the lordly musk-ox, and the herculean grizzly bear continue the series of large mammals appearing on the Canadian medium-value definitive stamps. Two of these stamps - the walrus and the grizzly bear - will ben available in five-stamp packs. The walrus is at home both on land and at sea. Awkward on land, the walrus trashes its flippers to move about effortlessly in water. The walrus also boasts a set of air sacks in its neck which enables it to sleep at sea, head resting above water. The walrus' tusks are elongated upper canine teeth, used for feeding and in courtship rites. The tusks also sometimes anchor the animal to ice floes or rocks. Brian Tsang, a Toronto graphic artist, designed these three mammal stamps to suggest the animals' environment in the same graphic style used for previous stamps in the series featuring large Canadian mammals.
