Description
This year, we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Canadian flag (1965-1990) and to mark the occasion, Canada Post Corporation is issuing a commemorative stamp on June 29, 1990. After Confederation in 1867, the Canadian Red Ensign, which bears the Canadian coat of arms, was one of the flags used regularly for qualified purposes. In 1964, under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson's direction, an all-party committee was appointed to select a distinctive new flag. After lengthy debate in the House of Commons, Canada's present flag was finally adopted. Queen Elizabeth II signed the royal proclamation, and on February 15, 1965 Canada's national flag became a reality. Montreal designer Clermont Malenfant depicted a fluttering flag against a sky of fireworks. The stamp is being offered in a special 16-stamp pane.
