Description

In order to commemorate the centennial of Norman Bethune's birth and his accomplishments, Canada and the People's Republic of China are each issuing se tenant pairs of commemorative stamps featuring the same design. Bethune was born on March 3, 1890 in Gravenhurst, Ontario and died 49 years later in China, after dedicating his life to the advancement of medicine and humanitarianism. For this reason, he is depicted on both stamps performing surgery. A traditional Official First Day Cover (OFDC) will be available, as well as the Souvenir Edition which contains a pair of Chinese and a pair of Canadian mint stamps along with two joint First Day Covers. The stamps are the product of close co-operation between Canada and China. Canadian designers Jean Morin and Wanda Lewicka created the stamps' design and layout, and Chinese artist Liu Xiangping illustrated them. The printing process for the Canadian stamps involved steel engraving and lithography; a combination of steel engraving with photogravure was used for the Chinese version of the stamps.
