Description

Marc-Aurèle Fortin was born in Ste-Rose, Quebec, in 1888. His artistic tendencies displeased his family, but Fortin persevered. He studied art in Montreal and eventually scraped together enough money to study abroad by working at the Montreal Post Office and at an Edmonton bank. Upon his return he specialized in the landscape of the St. Lawrence Valley. He used watercolours because they were easy to carry on his bicycle. Fortin believed that "Canadian artists should take their inspiration from the countryside and progress towards a national art... We should excel in landscapes, exactly as the French do". He died in 1970. The stamp shows a landscape painted by Fortin in 1937, titled "At Baie Saint-Paul". The painting is in the collection of the Musée du Québec. Pierre Fontaine prepared the type format for the Fortin stamp.
