Description

Canada's forests have played a vital part in the development and economic growth of this country. In commemoration, Canada Post Corporation is issuing a set of four stamps in conjunction with the 19th World Congress of the International Union Forestry and Research Organizations in Montreal. Of Canada's eight significant forest regions, four are being commemorated. The Boreal, comprising 75 per cent of Canada's forests, is a highly coniferous region stretching from Newfoundland to the Yukon. The Acadian, which is concentrated in the Maritimes, is characterized by its red spruce. The Great Lakes/St. Lawrence forest region, extending inland from those bodies of water, is known for its eastern white pine but contains a wide variety of species. Along Canada's Pacific coast and in the Queen Charlotte Islands, the Coast Forest boasts such giants as the douglas fir and western red cedar and also includes a few deciduous trees in limited distribution. Toronto graphic designer Malcolm Waddell, of the firm Eskind Waddell, combined Jan Waddell's foliage illustrations with photographs by Sherman Hines, J.A. Kraulis, Freeman Patterson and Greg Scott to create designs depicting the changing seasons.
