Description
The second set in a series of Canadian Folklore stamps will be issued on October 1, 1991 featuring folktales. These four colourful and entertaining stamps will launch October as Stamp Month in Canada. Given its long coastline full of coves, isolated bays and islands, Nova Scotia abounds in folktales of buried treasures. It's the perfect typography not only for today's drug smugglers but for the pirates of yore. Typical tales involves sinister pirates burying their ill-gotten booty with the body of a murdered seaman on top of the treasure chest so that his ghost would guard it. A dream might reveal the site to a local who would proceed with friends in the dead of night to uncover the loot. The ground rule was no talking for fear of waking the ghost. Inevitably, however, a word would be spoken and the treasure hunters would flee for their lives from the enraged ghost. Designer Ralph Tibbles teamed up with illustrators Allan Cormack and Deborah Drew-Brook to create this year's Folktales stamps, as well as last year's Legendary Creatures stamps.
