Description

Prominent Canadian gardens are the subject of five stamps issued on May, 1991. Southern Ontario's Royal Botanical Gardens came into being as the result of the determination of two members of the Hamilton Park Board. Cecil V. Land and the Hon. Thomas Baker McQuesten wanted to create a "rival" to Britain's famous Kew Gardens. They suggested that a large tract of land near the Niagara Escarpment be set aside, and on November 12, 1929, the project began. The project provided hundreds of jobs during the Great Depression as men hauled rocks and soil to the location. Originally known simply as "Botanical Gardens" in 1930, King George V decreed that the designation "Royal" could be added and in 1941 the Ontario legislature passed the Royal Botanical Gardens Act, which established the RBG as an independent institution with scientific and educational objectives. Designer David Wyman and illustrator Gerard Gauci combined their talents to produce the designs.
