Description

Prominent Canadian gardens are the subject of five stamps issued on May, 1991. Early in this century, Jenny Butchart of Tod Inlet, north of Victoria, British Columbia, decided to transform her husband's spent quarry into a colourful horticultural site. Inexperienced but determined, she had rocks gathered in strategic places to create raised flower beds and had top soil brought in by the ton from the neighbouring farms. Eventually she opened the Butchart Gardens to the curious public and served them tea. During World War II, the gardens could not be maintained and when the Butchart passed away in the early 1950s, a grandson undertook the task of restoring the neglected land to its former glory. Designer David Wyman and illustrator Gerard Gauci combined their talents to produce the designs.
