Description
A set of four se-tenant stamps honouring the accomplishments of Canadian physicians was issued on March 15, 1991. Canada's first licensed woman physician, Jennie (Jenny) K. Trout, is honoured on the second of the four stamps. Born on April 21, 1841 in Kelso, Scotland, Jennie Kidd Gowanlock emigrated to Canada in 1847. While a teacher in 1865, she married Edward Trout. With an interest in medicine and encouraged by her husband, she entered the Pennsylvania Women's Medical College in Philadelphia and obtained her degree, but it had no legal status. Undaunted, she wrote the exam at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Toronto, and in 1875 became the first woman licensed to practice medicine in Canada. Toronto designer René Milot portrayed the four doctors in front of buildings significant to their individual careers. Dr. Trout is seen in front of the Women's Medical College in Kingston.
