Description
Canada Post Corporation's 1989 Christmas stamps feature winter landscapes by four Canadian painters. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' "Champ-de-Mars, Winter" (1892) is shown on the 33-cent GREET MORE stamp. Created by William Brymner, Canada's first great art teacher, the painting shows a public square popular for Sunday strolls in turn-of-the-century Montreal. The GREET MORE stamp is available only in packs of 10 stamps, and must be used with GREET MORE cards and envelopes. Ottawa's David Nethercott and Viviane Warburton developed the design concepts for these four stamps showing Canadian winter landscapes. Through their use of decorative borders and a seasonal message, the stamps suggest the look of elegant Christmas cards. Nethercott and Warburton's past works for Canada Post Corporation include the typographical design for the Dogs of Canada stamps and the design of the Frances Ann Hopkins stamp. Both issues appeared in 1988.
