Description

Canadians are already looking forward to 29 November 1987. On that day in Vancouver, two teams, soon to be determined, will play for the Grey Cup for the seventy-fifth time. Canadian football was still evolving from rugger, soccer and American football when in 1909 Governor General Grey donated a $48.00 "trophy for the amateur rugby football championship of Canada". The University of Toronto defeated the Toronto Parkdale Canoe Club in the first game. The Grey Cup became a national event, perhaps even an instrument of national unity, when in 1921 a western team first competed. But it was at the 1948 Grey Cup that revelling Calgary fans turned the event into much more than the championship of the only professional team sport played in Canada; they transformed it into a nationwide festival. A football in play, a crowd of spectators and the famous Grey Cup are superimposed on a background depicting a regulation Canadian football playing field. Toronto designer Les Holloway has completed the design by using typography that resembles the insignias found on the players' football jerseys.
