Description
On 16 November 1982, the United Nations General Assembly declared 1986 the International Year of Peace. The objective of the year is to "devote a specific time to concentrating the efforts of the United Nations and its Member States to promote the ideals of peace and give evidence of their commitment to peace in all viable ways." The year will focus on peach as a pre-condition for development and social progress as a requirement for the implementation of human rights as well as the satisfaction of human needs for food, shelter, health and education. The Peace Year stamp will be issued on 16 September 1986, the International Day of Peace. Carole Jeghers of Montreal, developed the design for the Peace Year stamp, which features a symbolic dove placed in a protective attitude toward the fragile and vulnerable globe of earth.
